Philosophical Blog Recognition

As you may already know: this blog is mentioned in an article about yoga blogs by Lauren Ladoceour on page 85 of the August 2009 issue of Yoga Journal.  And now that I'm done practicing the restaurant scene from When Harry Met Sally and fetishizing the page with little hearts, silver balls, and arrows I'll talk a bit more about this incredible experience. I mean this is the first (and hopefully not the last) time that something I have done has shown up in such a big magazine. Wow! I'm still excited.

Here's the quote that mentions my blog, "Subjects range from the philosophical (brookshall.blogspot.com)..." Aaaah, my blog has been seen as philosophical, how great!

The traditional yogic texts like the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita offer tools to help us navigate our inner worlds--something we desperately need in troubled times, such as ours. The journey that being alive presents isn't always easy... Nor is it supposed to be. We live in a world of opposing forces, and our job (the way I see it) is to maintain balance in all this, and to do what is right even when it is not easy. The practice of yoga, and studying about it is a medicine for me. It helps me to be at home in my life.

I've been mentioning my inclusion in the magazine to students. Some of them have clapped, and everybody seems happy for me. I'm also sure that some are indifferent, and some colleagues are jealous. It's part of the richness of life that everybody expresses and reacts differently. So I'd like to thank everybody who is happy for me, and I want to thank those who are indifferent to my writing yet enjoy my yoga classes. I also want to honor those who react with sourness and resentment for those emotions have taught me so much about where I need healing, and helped to point me toward the work I need to do.

Its excellent that you're so excited about this - I think that when someone goes out of their way to recognise your blog, that's a wonderful thing. And when they do so in a high-profile magazine, well, I'd be partying too!!

You have a great blog here and it does tend to the philosophical sometimes. But then the topics you write about are broader than that, too.

I hope that you and the other mentioned bloggers all get some more regular readers out of this. Never know, huh?

Hi Brooks,
I know I wrote about this in my blog- and I hope you know that I think your blog is fantastical and you are so deserving of all the praise. :) Like svasti said, you should be excited about this- YJ truly chose right.

I guess I was just a little surprised and disappointed with another bloggers reaction (negative) and post (negative). I expected more- but then maybe that's part of my own personal practice- recognizing my own expectations.

I find your blog philosophical, but in a very reachable sense (hah, is that even a word?).
I like reading about how you are encorporating "yoga" into your everyday life. It's beautiful :)

Many Blessings!

I see you as "philosophical" in the sense of being unpretentious and thoughtful (which is I think a somewhat older definition of the term, as opposed to the kind of academic hyper-intellectual monologues now associated with it).

I must admit I was a tad jealous when I saw others' blogs were mentioned in the article but not my own! LOL! BUT, I'm very happy for you and glad to be introduced to your blog.

I will tag you in delicious to remind me to visit and spread the word.

I think it's wonderful that you were mentioned in Yoga Journal. So glad I stumbled upon your blog at some point..it is definitely thought provoking, which makes me want to come back for more.

I hope more and more bloggers are recognized for the time, effort, love, and energy they put into the work.
